Christmas Angels History
They Watch and Safeguard Over Us

The word angel is Greek in origin and means one who is sent or messenger. Angels are believed to be intermediaries between God and mankind. They are traditionally pictured as having human bodies and wings. This concept actually began in the Old Testament or Hebrew Bible. There are actually several ranks of angels in the bible. The Seraphim and Cherubim are thought to be the highest order of angels, with the Archangel being the leader or chief angel. There are also Guardian angels that represent a comforting presence for us.

No figures in the Bible are as delightful as the heavenly angels who played such an important role in the Christmas celebration. They brought news of the birth of the Christ child to Mary and Joseph. After the birth of Jesus an angel of Christmas appeared to the shepherds in the fields telling them of the news. They were joined by a hosts of angels singing God's praises. An angel is the form of a star led the three wise men to the manger to visit the Christ child. After their visit an angel appeared in a dream to Joseph telling him to flee to Egypt.

Since the nativity, angels have been prominent in both the art and music of Christmas. No Christmas pageant would be complete without children dressed in white robes playing the part of angels. They have long been a symbol of Christmas and have been portrayed on Christmas cards and ornaments. They have been used in the classic and modern movies as an intervener in the lives of the movie characters. Angel pictures are seen hanging on the walls of homes through out the world, as well as angel figurines that are displayed in the homes. Angels are also displayed in gold and silver guardian jewelry to be worn on clothing to remind us that an angel is safeguarding us. Christmas angels are also a favorite item to give as gifts to those we love.
