Feather boas are fashion accessories that are worn, either wrapped around the neck like a scarf, or draped elegantly over the arms and back like a stole. Feather boas have at times been considered quite fashionable, but today are usually considered quite campy.

Feather boas are very long ropes of feathers that have been sewn onto strings to form strands. The standard length for boas is six feet. Since there is alot of hand labor involved in the making of a feather boa, the price can vary greatly. The price also varies depending on the type of feather used to make the boa.

Feather boas can be made from various types of feather, but are most commonly made from ostrich, turkey(chandelle or marabou), and coque(chicken). The feathers are usually dyed in a variety of bright colors. Two-toned feathers are very popular, with the feather dyed one color and the tip dyed another. The white tipped black feather can make quite a dramatic statement.



The ostrich feather boa is the most expensive boa and they are made from the larger feathers of the ostrich. Boas made from turkey feathers are less expensive than the ostrich ones and come in two types. The chandelle feather boa is made from the larger turkey feathers, while the marabou feather boa is made from the smaller turkey feathers and is less expensive than the chandelle boas. The coque feather boas are made from chicken feathers and are quite inexpensive.

Before you select your feather boa, first consider how you are going to wear it. If you are doing a floor show and will be farther away from the viewer, then the chandelle feather boa will show off better because the feathers are stiffer and stand out in all directions. But, these can feel scratchy against the skin, so the softer marabou feather boa may be more suitable.

Although feather boas are not considered fashionable today, there are still opportunities for one to wear a boa if they choose. Mardi Gras celebrations would not be complete without feather boas. They are also worn by women involved with historic re-enactment societies, and are always a great accessory for Halloween parties. It doesn't matter where you choose to wear a feather boa, just have fun with them because the moment you put one on you can not help but feel glamourous.
