Located off the west coast of Ecuador, the Galapagos archipelago consists of 19 main islands and
several smaller islands. Despite being isolated by geography and volcanic in origin, the islands
have many unique species of animals and plants.

The archipelago were not discovered until 1535 and it wasn't until 1832 that the islands were
annexed by Equador and named Archipelago de Colon. They are most commonly called Galapagos after
the Giant Tortoise found on many of the islands. In 1934 some of the islands were declared a
wildlife sanctuary and then in 1959 most of the islands were declared a national park and
protective measures have been taken to preserve the unique geography and wildlife.
Tourism began in 1960's and has opened the worlds eyes to the diversity of the marine life and the
flora and fauna of the islands. This has given many tourist the most memorable experiences of
their lives. From walking through colonies of birds to swimming with sea lions or sharks, a cruise
to Galapagos is one you will not forget.

if you are interested in the island's natural history and amazing wildlife, then you may return
