Gingerbread Houses
You're Only Limited by YOUR Imagination
Every year, as Christmas time approaches, I find my thoughts returning to memories of my mother
preparing gingerbread for the gingerbread house we made every year. She would bake the pieces
and assemble the walls and roof as we watched and then it was our turn to decorate. There were
years when the houses were crooked and other years when they turned out perfect. It didn't
matter to us, we always displayed them proudly.
Each year, as we grew older, the houses seemed to become more detailed. You don't have to limit
yourself to a plain house, you can make any shape you like. There are even pattern kits that
you can purchase at craft stores, or design your own, which is what my mother always did. They
are not as difficult as you would think, just be sure to allow yourself plenty of time to put the
pieces together. Your only limitation is the amount of space you have available to display your
creation.
There are several recipes for gingerbread dough, just find one thats right for you and let the
fun begin. The decorations are only limited by your imagination. Almost any candy can be used,
from chocolate chips, M&M's, red hots, peppermints to licorce. Necco's and Shredded Mini Wheats
make good roofs. So let the children pick there favorites and see what develops.
After the holidays, the real fun begins, because everyone knows that the best part of making a
gingerbread house is eating it. So, why not start a new family tradition and build your own
house this year.
