Gonzo Journalist Hunter S. Thompson Tribute
I awoke, this morning, to some sad news: Gonzo Journalist
Dr. Hunter S. Thompson is reported to have fatally shot
himself in the head at his home near Aspen, Colorado. Thompson
was 67, and was associated with the so-called "new journalism"
movement of the 60's and 70's, where writers took a more personal
approach to their reporting.
Thompson was a rather prolific writer for Rolling Stone Magazine,
and authored one of my favorite books, "Fear and Loathing in
Las Vegas."
Thompson also was the model for the character of "Uncle Duke"
in the popular "Doonesbury" comic strip. He was portayed by
actor Bill Murray in the film, "Where the Buffalo Roam" (1980),
as well as Johnny Depp in the movie-version of "Fear and Loathing
in Las vegas" (1998).
Many fans remember Dr. Thompson as a man who "wrote the truth,
saying what people were afraid to say."
