How the Grinch Stole Christmas History
A True Classic Holiday Story

This classic holiday story that is loved by generation after generation made its debut on CBS TV
on December 18, 1966. It has become one of the most watch holiday specials in the history of
American television and is rebroadcast annually.
Dr. Seuss was born Theodor Seuss Geisel and had a natural aptitude for rhyme and whimsy that he
brought to his characters and stories. He began his career as Dr. Seuss in 1937 and in 1957 the
story "How the Grinch Stole Christmas" was published and was one of his own favorite stories. It
was in 1966 that Geisel's good friend Chuck Jones urged him to let him animate the story into a
TV special. Since it only takes about ten minutes to read the story, they had to add songs to
lengthen it. Geisel wrote lyrics for the songs with composer Albert Hague with the most memorable
being "You're a Mean One, Mr. Grinch". The songs were sung by Thurl Ravenscroft, who was the voice
of "Tony the Tiger" the kids cereal mascot. The show featured Boris Karloff as the narrator and
the Grinch.
In 1957, shortly after the book was published, a little known video was produced with actor Walter
Matthau reading the story and the original drawings from the book were used for the visual part of
the presentation. Then in 2000 the story was made into a live action film. The film was directed
by Ron Howard and starred Jim Carrey as the Grinch. Because of the additions made to the story, it
was considerably different from the original book.
The story of "How the Grinch Stole Christmas" has enchanted millions across generations and around
the world, as each year the unique voice of Boris Karloff continues to bring the Grinch to life
and the Who village choir extends the sounds of Christmas and goodwill. Because Christmas is about
love and peace and sharing it with one another, this story has revealed that love for many decades.
That is why "How the Grinch Stole Christmas" is and always will be a timeless treasure.
