Hurricane Katrina Takes Aim at the Louisana-Mississippi Coast
After leaving at least 7 dead, as well as mass destruction in Florida,
Hurricane Katrina continues to build up strength in the warm waters of
the Gulf of Mexico as a Category 3 hurricane, with winds of at least 111 mph.
She is expected to become a Category 4 storm before hitting land for a second time,
probably Monday, according to the National Hurricane Center.
Many Louisiana residents are fleeing the state in advance of Hurricane Katrina's
possible landfall on the Mississippi Gulf Coast. Evacuations are mandatory for
southern parishes.
A five-day projection of Katrina's path indicates a landing near the
Mississippi-Louisiana state line, and Mississippi's Governor has declared a "state
of emergency. Evacuations of that state's coastal areas are already underway, as well.

The last time Mississippi or Louisiana saw landfall from a Category 4 hurricane
was in 1969 when Hurricane Camille killed 256 people.
As of this writing, hurricane-force winds extend outward up to 40 miles from
the storm's center, and tropical storm-force winds extended outward up to 150 miles.
Forecasters report Katrina's eye is "re-defining itself."
