Coastal Residents Flee Category 5 Hurricane Katrina
Gulf highways are clogged with evacuees, fleeing the wrath
of Hurricane Katrina. Responsible for at least 9 deaths and
widespread destructiona, when she was a Category 1
storm, Katrina has reached Category 5 status. She first came ashore in
Florida, leaving over a million and a half residents without power.
The Governor of New Orleans has issued a mandatory evacuation order
for his city. Emergency officials along the Gulf Coast have
urged all residents to move to safer ground, as Hurricane
Katrina steams towards shore with maximum sustained winds of
approximately 175 MPH.

The National Hurricane Center reports that low-lying areas along
the Gulf Coast could expect storm surges of up to 25 feet or more,
as Katrina makes landfall Monday.
Category 5 is the highest category on the Saffir-Simpson Scale
of hurricane strength. Only three Category 5 storms have
made landfall in the U.S., since records were kept.
