Hurricane Katrina continues to hammer the Gulf Coast, this morning, after coming ashore in southeastern Louisiana, packing at least 140 mph. Although Katrina weakened to a very strong Category 4 storm, coastal residents were warned not to let their guard down, due to catastrophic conditions.

Hitting on the highlights for you, as New Orleans APPEARS to be a tad more fortunate than had originally been expected, buts its STILL very bad:

Emergency officials are reporting "total structural failure" in portions of the Big Easy, a secction of the Superdome roof has been ripped off, and sources believe the lower 9th Ward, on New Orleans' east side are under at least 6 feet of water, following pump failure.

Indications are that Coastal Mississippi may bear the bruntof Hurricane Katrina. Biloxi is the next in Katrina's sights. However, a military retirement home at Gulf Port (27 feet above sea level) is said to be experiencing severe flooding on its first floor.

Much of dowtown Mobile, Alabama is also said to be under water, at this hour.

This powerful storm is already responsibe for untold deaths (as reports continue to come in), widespread power outages, catastrophic damage, flooding, road and highway closures, and dangerous tornado activity. Things are far from over, as Tropical Storm conditions are expected as far inland as Georgia, Tennessee, and Kentucky (perhaps further), as Katrina makes her way inland, as evidenced by the below NOAA satellite image
