Hurricane Disaster Preparedness Kits
The National Hurricane Center offers some basic guidleines for
preparing a Disaster Supply Kit.
There are items you WILL need to have, regardless of whether you
decide to "ride out a hurricane," or evacuate your residence.
Water - At least 1 gallon daily per person for 3 to 7 days.
Food - At least enough for 3 to 7 days, including:
non-perishable packaged or canned food, juices,
foods for infants, or the elderly (if applicable),
snack foods, non-electric can opener, cooking tools,
fuel, paper plates, plastic utensils.
For Comfort - Blankets, pillows, etc.
Clothing - Seasonal items, rain gear, sturdy shoes.
First Aid Kit - Including medicines and prescription drugs.
Special Items - For babies and the elderly (if applicable).
Toiletries - Personal hygiene items and moisture wipes.
Battery-powered devices - Flashlight(s), batteries,
radio (battery or crank operated) with NOAA weather radio capabilities.
Cash - Banks and ATMs may not be open or available for extended
periods.
Keys.
Books, games, and toys.
Important Documents - In a waterproof container, to include,
insurance, medical records, bank account numbers, Social
Security card, ID cards, etc.
Tools - Always keep a set with you during the storm.
Pet Care Items - Proper identification, immunization records,
medications, ample supply of food and water, a carrier or cage,
muzzle and leash.
Make sure your vehicle fuel tanks are filled, as you must be prepared for
evacuation gridlocks. Service stations may run out of fuel or
be unable to operate during power outages.
