Pumpkin Pie
A Traditional American Dessert
Pumpkin pie consists of a pumpkin custard baked in a single pie shell with no top crust. It is
usually flavored with nutmeg, ginger, cinnamon, allspice and cloves and served with whipped cream
on top. Traditionally, the pie was made with fresh pumpkin, that had to be cooked first before
being baked. Today, the most common way to prepare pumpkin pie is to buy canned pumpkin and add
spices, thus saving the time and effort required to make your own pumpkin puree.
Pumpkin pies are usually made in the late autumn and early winter, when pumpkins are harvested,
but can be enjoyed all year round. This traditional American dessert is especially served during
the Christmas and Thanksgiving holidays.
When the settlers first came to the New World they were introduce to the pumpkin by the Indians.
They used their English recipes for sweet pies, made from boiled spiced fruit, to prepare pies
using pumpkin. In the fall of 1621 the settlers wanted to give thanks to God and celebrated with
a feast. Pumpkin pie was served at this feast which is known today as Thanksgiving. Thus, the
national tradition of serving Pumpkin Pie on Thanksgiving Day was born and continues on today.
