Despite the way if sounds, skydiving is actually one of the safest extreme sports around. That
does not mean it is without risk, after all you will be jumping out of an airplane and hurtling
toward the ground at 120 miles per hour. Skydiving is not for the faint of heart, but can be
one of the most incredible experiences you will ever have. Before you decide skydiving is for
you do some research and learn about the sport.
As a beginning skydiver, there are several ways you can experience your first time in the air.
The only requirement for jumping is that you be at least 18 years old and under 250 pounds. You
should consult your doctor before jumping if you have any heart problems or other medical
conditions that could cause undue risk to you and your instructor.
So, if you're ready to go there are about 400 skydiving centers across the United States to
choose from. Most skydiving centers work the same. You will be required to sign legal documents
releasing the skydiving company from any responsibility should an accident happen. You will be
trained by a certified instructor.
Depending on how brave you are, how much time you have and how much money you want to spend.
There are three methods of skydiving available for your first jump: tandem, static line and
accelerated freefall. Each offers different levels of freedom and require different amounts
of training time.
Tandem is the most common method for first time skydivers. This method requires the least amount
of training time. You will wear a harness and be strapped to your jumpmaster and leave the plane
together. They will control the jump from plane to ground. So, all you have to do is enjoy the
ride.
Static Line is also used for first time skydivers. This method requires a four-to-six hour
training class. With this method of skydiving, a cord is attached from the plane to your
parachute and pulls the parachute open almost immediately after you jump out. This means that you
don't have to pull your own rip cord but, you have to land yourself.
Accelerated Freefall is the way to go for the true thrill seeker. You will on your own. This
means you must pull your own rip cord and float to the ground solo. This method usually requires
training that lasts all day, and is the method used most frequently for those interested in
becoming serious skydivers.
No matter which method you choose, make sure you have your first jump videotaped. It is also
more fun to go in a group, so find some friends and enjoy the most exciting time of your life.
