Sugar free candy is candy made sugar alcohol, which is a substance that replaces sugar. There are
several different sugar alcohols, but the most common ones are sorbitol, manitol, and laxitol.
These are simply sugars that are derived from alcohol. They are readily converted by the body
into fructose and glucose.
If you have to monitor your sugar intake or if you just choose to, you can now find almost any
food using one of these artificial sweetners. While most of the sugar free candy, gum and mints
taste good, the American Diabetes Association says they should be used in moderate amounts.
The problem with these sweetners is that the body slowly absorbs them from the intestines and may
produce a laxative or gaseous effect. All the sugar alcohols can cause these side effects. So I
would suggest that you not eat a lot of sugar free candy at one time.
