Star Trek Memories
TOS, The Original Series
Classic Trek
I'll admit, I'm old. I remember when the original
Star Trek series premiered on televion, September 8th, 1966.
I never was much of a "Trekkie," but I hung in there with
the crew of the Starship U.S.S. Enterprise for all three
seasons. The Original Series, also referred to as "TOS"
or "Classic Trek," ended in 1969 after 70 episodes. Its
2004, and I still enjoy the re-runs.
In later years, as a radio news reporter, I was fortunate
to have interview the main original cast members at
various conventions and media events.
Although all the interviews were memorable, a couple of
them really stand out.
George Takei, who portrayed Mr. Sulu, spent quite some
time with me at a station I worked at in Texas. After
getting off the air with me and a DJ, he just kind of
hung around, and even "cut up" with us. George is definitely a
great guy! We had a photo taken of us at my desk, and
exchanged autographs on copies of the picture. Its
an old 8x10 black and white glossy, that still hangs
on my wall.
James Doohan, who portrayed Mr. Scott, or "Scotty" was
a real hoot when I interviewed him! James is excellent
with dialects. He did this bit: "What if Scotty was
of a different nationality?" He then went on to perform
some quotes in the appropriate voices. I'll tell you,
that interview was hilarious!
Like I said, I'm not a "Trekkie," but Star Trek has given
me some great memories. As they say: "Live long and prosper!"
