Winter Weather Emergency Terms
Used by Meteorologists and Forecasters
Stay informed about potential winter weather threats.
Pay close attention to commercial radio and television,
for the latest winter storm watches, advisories,
and warnings. Another excellent source for information,
is a NOAA Weather Radio unit, preferably one with an
alarm feature.
There are some phrases meteorologists and forecasters use,
to warn you of possible winter problems:
WINTER STORM WATCH
Severe winter conditions could be on the way, in a few days.
You could experience heavy snow and/or ice.
WINTER WEATHER ADVISORY
Winter weather is expected to cause major inconveniences,
and could be hazardous. If you exercise caution, this
shouldn't become life threatening. Motorists usually
face the toughest challenge.
WINTER STORM WARNING
Severe winter conditions are upon you, or are about to
begin, in your community.
BLIZZARD WARNING
Snow and strong winds will join up to produce a blinding
snow, with visibility near zero. You can expect deep
drifts, and life threatening wind chill factors.
FROST or FREEZE WARNING
Sub freezing temperatures are expected. There could be
significant damage to plants, crops, or fruit trees.
Don't leave yur pets outside.
When you hear those phrases, be prepared to take action.
