If Hurricanes Weren't Enough...

Its bad enough we've seen such mass disasters recently, from hurricanes, to tornados, to rioting in France... What can I say, the darned list goes on! On top of it all, yet ANOTHER alleged school shooting incident...This one in a VERY SMALL Tennessee town. That's right! Anything can happen at ANYTIME - ANYWHERE!

Read details HERE!

It Never Got Weird Enough for Me

I had to take some time off from Blogging, mainly because I got wrapped up in various hurricane relief efforts for both Katrina and Rita. Believe me, that will burn you out on almost everything, to a degree.

I'll tell you what re-motivated me, besides some time away from attempting to be "creative at the keyboard," was watching an older flick on the Sundance Channel. "Where the Buffalo Roam," featured Bill Murray (in his early career) as Gonzo Journalist Doctor Hunter S. Thompson.

The movie brought back some memories that I'd like to share: It Never Got Weird Enough for Me...

To Boldy Go Nowhere

I'll admit, it was a dramatic sight, as Discovery lifted off from Pad 39B, and all appeared well, as NASA "Returned to Flight," following the fatal 2003 Columbia Mission. Read my report on the launch HERE!

However, all was not as planned. Guess what? Well, you know the story...That pesky foam hit the shuttle - AGAIN - upon launch. NASA, however, has deemed things to be OK. OK?

Read about that AND my commentary: To Boldy Go Nowhere.

In Memory of Scotty (James Doohan)

Sadly, one of my favorite actors from the original Star Trek television series has passed on. James Doohan, who played Scotty, the engineer aboard the Starship Enterprise, died yesterday.

As a reporter, I was very priviledged to have interviewed him, as well as other cast members on various occasions.

Scotty (James) was a real hoot! I know I'll miss him, as will his fans, wordwide!

Top 10 Movie Car Chase Scenes

Most everybody loves a good movie char chase, right? Well, an automobile insurance company has reportedly released the results of an email survey where they were ranked by audiences.

Its probably no surprise, but that famous San Francisco chase scene from "Bullitt," starring Steve McQueen (1968) was ranked number one, with the number two spot going to the remake of "Gone in 60 Seconds."

Read the results of the survey HERE!

Seniors Dating Online

I'll admit, I took a bit of a break, there, for awhile. There were several web projects that needed to be updated and completed, as well as the NEW design for THIS website and Blog.

I've add new categories and articles, obviously, to the Main Article Index, as well as new and improved links to other Blogs, and a new color scheme. I hope you like it, as the old one had been a bit "drab" from the onset.

Now, lets get down to business, shall we? I saw on the news, last night, that senior citizens are increasingly using the internet to make friends and even date. The internet has, apparently, made it considerably easier on the older generation to "get in touch" with - perhaps - someone special, following a divorce or the unfortunate death of a spouse. Its good to be back! ;-)

Herb Alpert's "Whipped Cream" 40th Anniversary

One of my all-time favorite trumpet players is Herb Alpert. He had a style that I could never duplicate, although I wasn't much of a trumpeter, LOL.

His group, The Tijuana Brass, made bank on an album called, "Whipped Cream & Other Delights," back in the mid 60's. I almost can't believe its been that long ago, and a 40th Anniversay Edition is being released.

One of its instrumentals, "A Taste of Honey," was a big success. The album cover featured a rather "naughty" photo (for its time). By the way, I still have the original LP. It stayed at number one on the hit charts for eight weeks.

Spring Stargazing

With Spring upon us, as well as warmer temperatures, its going to be more enjoyabble to get out and view the night sky. Although I have a telescope, there's plenty you can see with the naked eye.

Coming up April 22nd, there's a meteor shower: Lyrids. The best time to observe a meteor shower is after midnight.

Both Jupiter and Saturn can be seen in the evening sky during April. Look for Jupiter in the southeast and Saturn in the Southwest.

Diabetic Medication Tip

I'm a diabeteic, and we recently developed some houshold plumbing problems that temporarily drained my budget. Not having insurance that covers my medication costs, I would have been unable to refill my Avandia prescription.

If you get in a bind, here's something that should work for you, as it did for me. I telephoned my physician, requesting a week's supply of "samples." Not only did they helpfully provide me with enough to get me through, they actually provided me with well-over a month's worth! Keep in mind, this is a practice that you should NOT abuse. Its an emergency type of measure.

My major point in this story is, if you're a diabeteic, make sure you ALWAYS take your medication, and if you get in a pinch, contact your doctor.

The Death of a Gonzo Journalist

A man who is said to have written the truth when others were afraid to, Gonzo Journalist Dr. Hunter S. Thompson, is no longer with us.

I was saddened to learn that Thompson is reported to have fatally shot himself in the head at the age of 76.

He was a very prolific writer for Rolling Stone Magazine, as well as author of one of my favorite books, "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas."

Thompson, from the 60's and 70's era of the media, was a "journalist's journalist," in my opinion.

Lost in Space Memories

I recently discussed the 60's vintage sci-fi television show, "Lost in Space," with a friend of mine.

Looking back, it was amazingly ahead of its time and actually made its debut before Star Trek.

I have fond memories of the episodes, yup showing my age...AGAIN! But who can forget the classic scene of the robot, arms waving, yelling: "Danger Will Robinson!"

If you've never seen the show, or want to re-live a few old memories, I've put a page together with some info.

Its interesting to note that Angela Cartwright, who played Penny, has become a very accomplished photographer/artist.

My Tribute to Johnny Carson

I'd been putting this off, as it saddened me terribly. As you know by now, the former host of NBC's Tonight Show, Johnny Carson, passed away last weekend.

Carson held the reigns of the popular program for three decades, and I was fortunate enough to have been around for all of it.

He turned the program over to Jay Leno 13 years ago, and The Tonight Show has never been the same, nor has late night television, overall.

I've written a tribute article with a bit of history and my thoughts. If you'd like to learn more, read on...

Russian Cameras - Kiev 4am and FED-5

As you know, if you're a regular reader, I've re-taken (is that a word?) up the hobby of photography. I'm shying far away from the new-fangled digital camerals, and going back to the earlier film camera days, and not "hi tech" stuff either.

My latest passion is for Russian cameras.

Mainly because they are readily available for reasonable prices, and have the manual features that I have come to miss in recent years.

I've recently purchased two rangefinders, a Kiev 4am and a FED-5. Read More...

The Holga Camera

While many folks are embracing the concept of digital photography, I seem to be going the other way.

Years ago, one of my many hobbies was film photography. I was heavily into 35mm, medium format, as well as large format. In large format, I was limited to a 4x5 view camera. I also did all my own darkroom work.

It seems, these days, I actually want to my take photography back a few notches and am exploring the allure of the Holga Camera.

The Holga is an inexpensive plastic toy camera that take unbelievably artistic photographs. Its a cult classic. Read More...
