Insurance Companies Using Satellite Imagery

From Los Angeles comes word that some insurance companies are using satellite imaging to identify homes at so-called "high risk" for fire damage, due to their proximity to brush.

This rather intrusive development has alarmed some state regulators and privacy advocates.

Reportedly, First American Property and Casualty Insurance uses satellites to peer upon some 10 percent of the properties it insures. Most of them are said to be in areas of heavy brush in California, Nevada and Arizona.

State regulators reportedly say the measure is a form of discriminating against particular neighborhoods, possibly leading to policies being cancelled.

Others say the practice is just plainly scary and intrusive.
