Oak Ridge Housing Iraqi Uranium

Energy Secretary Spencer Abraham has announced the removal of about one and three quarter tons of low enriched uranium from a former nuclear research facility in Iraq.

Congressman Zach Wamp has confirmed the material is at the nation's nuclear facility in Oak Ridge, Tennessee.

Wamp (R), who represents the 3rd District, said the material could be used to make a so-called "dirty bomb."

"You don't want terrorists, that are operating in the region, to ever get their hands on this type of material, and so our Department of Energy, and frankly, Oak Ridge, has played a key role, here, at a classified level," Wamp said.

Quoting Wamp's tape-recorded telephone message to the news media: "Its a wonderful public service for our highly-skilled nuclear technicians to be engaged in securing this material, and bringing it back to the United States."

Wamp said the material will be studied to determine how it needs to be secured, so it can be removed as a threat against our nation.
